Gorsty Hall is situated between Crewe and Newcastle at Balterley and is a lovely water catering for pleasure fishermen as well carp anglers. The venue is easy to find and very car friendly, you can drive to all pegs on the one side of the lake and park close to where to you are fishing. This makes it disabled friendly and easier for every angler. There are two lakes at Gorsty, the old ancient pool and a newer small ‘specimen’ lake.
The main pool is quite big, with 52 pegs in total, and with the perfect feature of two huge lilly pads in the middle of the lake, something you just can’t help but cast to. The fishing on offer is excellent too, there are regular matches on the venue (you should always call before visiting to check) with good weights and also there are always carp guys after the bigger fish that inhabit the lake. There are carp to 24lb with good heads of smaller Carp, Crucians, Bream, Roach, Rudd and Tench.
The Specimen pool is a relatively new pool, being dug out about 12 years ago. It is a very small pool but is full of big carp. It was stocked with purely carp, 200 carp to be exact, ranging from 7lb to mid twenties, with two over 30lb. I have not fished this water myself, and have not seen any fish come out of there during my visits to the main lake. Something about it, despite its small size, cries out carp though, and I will definitely being hunting its biggies at some point over the summer. You can not reach this pool by car, but it’s not too far from the nearest car park section so it’s not a major haul.
There is also a ‘buttie bar’ on site that is open on weekends (not during the week though), offering some lovely hot food to fill your bellies whilst fishing. The prices are very good and the food is of excellent standard. They do not deliver to the bank though so please make sure your lines are out of the water whilst visiting. There is a toilet on site as well, which is to be used on all occasions.
The owner is a lovely gentleman; he is friendly and helpful and will be come to collect your money as soon as you arrive. On one occasion when I was fishing there midweek, we mistakenly thought that the sandwich bar would be opening and we asked him what time it opened. He apologised and explained that it was not open today, but he would be glad to go to the shop on our behalf and fetch whatever we wanted! My friend placed his order and off he went to the local shop and bought back supplies!! I think that says everything about the generosity and caring nature of the man and his willingness to help his customers, top bloke indeed.
Overall, Gorsty Hall is an excellent venue, it is lovely on the eye and offers very good fishing, very good food at weekends, good parking facilities and is well priced at £7 a day or £10 for two rods. Night fishing is priced at £20 per 24 hours, with times being very strict. There are several rules on this venue that must be adhered to, failure to do so will result in you being asked to leave and then being banned from the venue. Please check all rules before attending as hooks (barbless only) and baits are checked regularly on the bank side. The venues opening times are 7am – 9pm, unless of course you are doing overnighters.
