    Blake Hall Empty Blake Hall

Post by BertieBiggins Fri May 04, 2012 2:47 am

Situated in Brookhouse in Cheadle, Staffordshire, Blake Hall is a lovely complex consisting of five lakes in the middle of gorgeous countryside. The venue is open from 6am till dawn with no night fishing allowed (opening times vary through the seasons so please check before hand). On arriving at the venue you need to report to the club house first to pay and to check on availability on each lake, there are lots of matches held on all the lakes so it is important you check first. A full list of rules is both on a board by the door to the clubhouse and in a leaflet you will find on the bar inside the club. There are quite a few rules so I would strongly suggest calling beforehand to check before planning your methods. The main rules are one rod only, no keep nets, barbless hooks only, maximum size 10 hook, no braid, no boilies or nuts and you must use their own pellets only. All nets must be dipped on arrival and on departure.

All the lakes are well stocked and offer excellent sport with very good conditioned hard fighting fish of many species. Nearly all the pegs can be driven to and parked at, making if completely disabled friendly. Please be careful for poles whilst driving round the lakes though!

Capricious is the first lake you pass when entering the site, passing it on your right as you approach the clubhouse. It is approx 2 ½ acres and it is very well stocked with Carp, Roach, Bream, Rudd, Perch and Chubb and is predominately a match water. As the name suggests, the fishing is either excellent or hard going, with no explanation for either. I have never fished this water, but friends have reported ‘bagging up’ with carp averaging the 8lb mark.

Blake Pool is the original water at the venue; it is a lovely looking water, surrounded by trees and with four islands in a line down the middle of the lake. This lake has 41 pegs. This is one of the most popular lakes and regularly produced big catches and big fish. There are several big Carp in here, with a couple topping the 20lb mark. There are also big Bream, Tench, Barbel, Chubb, Roach, Perch and Crucians.

Hall Pool is probably my favourite lake here, another lovely looking water with a lovely big island feature, it is approx 3 ½ acres in size. Again it is fished heavily and is another favourite lake for matches. There are reeds to the far end of the lake, which is where I head if they are free. It has an excellent head of fish again, with big Carp to 20lb, many doubles and many, many carp around the 10lb mark. I caught eight Carp in one session all between 8lb-12lb, along with several other smaller Carp and Barbel. The fish are in excellent condition and are extremely fit fish offering superb sport. The fish stocked in this lake is similar to that on Blake Pool minus the Chubb.

Peninsular pool is the bottom and biggest lake at the venue at 8 acres, this lake comes a close 2nd to Hall as my favourite lake. Again stocked with lots of Carp, this lake holds the biggest of all the lakes with Carp around the 30lb mark, again with lots around the 10lb mark. The nearest side is the shallow side with the far side the deepest with depths of 12ft in places. Similarly stocked as both Hall and Blake, it also holds a good head of Tench. The fishing is excellent with superb quality fish once again.

The Cabin Pool is more of a beginner’s pool and is situated next to the clubhouse, as the name would give away. This is only a small pool of around ½ acre and is used predominately by children as they begin their careers as anglers. There are carp to 4lb and lots of silver fish to keep them busy and entertained. My nephew caught his fist carp on this pond and thus the seed was sown!

The facilities at Blake Hall are second to none to be honest, it has a wonderful club house which houses a restaurant, a patio dining area, a refreshments bar selling cans, crisps, ice creams and the like, and the toilets, which are of excellent quality and cleanliness. The food on offer is superb, you can have a sit down breakfast before your start your day, or you can take your food with you to your peg. The food is excellent and is very well priced, I can recommend it enough.

Inside the clubhouse, you will also find all the match results, along with all the photos on display of the lakes monsters; it will really get you in the mood before you start your session. There is also another hut behind the clubhouse where you can buy bait and accessories that you may have forgotten and at very reasonable prices too. It costs £6 per day to fish at Blake Hall, (£5 for concessions and £4 for U16’s) or you can buy a season ticket for £190 per year. I think you will agree, the prices are excellent and offer excellent value for money.

Hi mate, I am fishing a match here in a couple of weeks with a friends workmates, nothing serious. A couple of questions, we are on the Hall pool, it says on the Blake Hall website http://www.fisheries.co.uk/blakehall/index.htm that the carp in the lake only go to around 6lb, is this site old or something as your review says up to 20lb Just want to know how heavy to tackle up really?
    Also, is method feeder allowed?
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Hi Steve

On the link you have given, it does say 'and a few double figure fish' after the 6lb quote. It is also very old information and they have grown quite nicely Smile

Good luck and tight lines, what you have riding on it?

Ha ha, yeah i thought it must be old. Cheers for the info gents. It's only a tenner each in jobby, winner takes all I think. Always good to get a bit of info though as I doubt I'll get chance to fish it beforehand. All I need now is some decent fishing ability! Very Happy Mind you that never stopped you before Dan Wink

Any info on best baits or methods for the hall pool whilst Im here?!

    Cheers,
    Steve (Smee)

I have ALWAYS done well on meat, I tend to go out purely for the bigger fish in there so a big lump, but I'm sure you can put smaller chunks on.

I would also suggest fishing in the margins, I never fish more than 8ft out and as said about always do well. Either that or out by the island dependent on your pegs.

At the start of last season I used a shotgun feeder, stuffed with their own pellets and then just a single grain of corn, this also always had good success but but to repeatedly being snapped by the bigger boys I 'heavied up' and have never fished any other way.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. It was my main fishing venue last year, and I fished it to death at times and never went wrong with the above.

Oh, and congratulations, your last post was the 1000th on the forum Smile

    Lol. Erm Embarassed
Well lets get the excuses out there early, I drew a poor peg where everyone else around me struggled and... I can't think of anymore excuses!!
So the short answer to your question is shit! Had 2 bream all day and lost a couple of carp. Looking back it was my own fault, I swapped and changed methods far too often rather than building up a swim as I usually would. I have only fished a couple of matches and it is strange how different you can act in a match situation when you see other people catching!
I couldn't get a bite for love nor money on luncheon meat for some reason. The bloke that won it (with 44lb) caught on meat though.
Im going to go back in the next couple of weeks and just fish as I normally would and see how I go on as despite the lack of fish I really liked the venue and I reckon I would have a good day there just sticking to the basics rather than trying to be Steve Ringer fishing a match!

Yes fish are in the margins but bites are very shy...you could not tell the difference between a perch bite and a carp. Going again tomorrow with Brian Mellor & a couple of others. Watched "The Carp Crew" on Quest last week and have just prepared some 6mm punched potato soaked in strong gravy & coffee mixture! (cheaper than soft hook pellets)

The punched potato worked, caught a couple of fish on it. Was a bit slow, had 8 fish each biggest about 10 lb. I lost one on the pole fishing top two, hooked this fish, added another 3 sections fishing 16s elastic, just kept going, elastic at full stretch then ping...no hook! It's still early in the season and can't wait for the weather to warm up.

I always fish in the margins here right amongst the snags in tight places with a 7ft greys stalker rod as this allows me to bully them. Just under 15lb is the best iv'e had from here. I always used tandoori flavoured luncheon meat.

Lovely place and nice well mannered helpful folk who run it.
